Searching for a job can be a hassle if you are unemployed. Looking for that first job, or just job-hopping from one place to another can really take a toll on you if you are unprepared to handle the job market. More now, in 2022, looking for the right job takes strategy, timing, and a little dose of confidence. To get ahead of the curve it is a good idea to consider the following steps:

           1) Build An Eye-Catching and Informational Resume

Before you begin your job search, make sure to create and/or update your professional resume. Ensure that your resume has clear objectives tailored to your industry and job position, and keep your resume focused on positive results and accomplishments. Employers like to see a consistent format that is easy to follow.

Make sure you list the most important, relevant items first. For example, you may decide to move your “Internships” and “Projects” sections above your “Customer Service Experience” section. Underneath each experience, you should also put the most important bullet points first. Within each section, you must list experiences in reverse chronological order, starting with the most recent.

Another tip is to qualify and quantify your experiences whenever possible, including numbers and percentages when you can. Highlight specific accomplishments rather than expanding on every detail. Lastly, proofread your work. Look at the sample resume below and notice what is done well, and what can be improved.

           Resume Don’ts

Do not mislead employers about your GPA, skills, or abilities.

Do not Include long, generic objective statements. Employers will not read them.

Do not make general claims (“Good communication skills”) without providing examples.

Submit references on the same page as your resume. They should be kept in a separate document and provided when the employer asks for them.

Remember that your resume is the first impression that employers will use to determine if they would like to meet with you to discuss the potential job. If you want to be taken seriously make sure to invest some time, research, and effort to ensure that your resume can compete with other job candidates.

           2) Customize A Job Cover Letter

The next step in a successful job search is to develop a cover letter. This is a very important document that should not be skipped because it helps the employer see your personality! They can use this to determine how you would fit within their organization. It gives you a chance to stand out as a strong candidate and also explains some of your skills and experiences. When creating a cover letter, consider the following:

            Include industry-specific keywords

Talk about some key strengths or skills

            Include your current contact information

Explain how your skills will help the company

Research the company before writing the cover letter

Ask someone to proofread your cover letter for errors

           Cover Letter Don’ts

Do not use a font that is hard to read

            Do not include irrelevant information

Do not focus on what the job or company can do for you

Do not address salary unless introduced by the employer

Do not forget to personally sign the letter, preferably in blue

Do not go beyond one page. In most cases, three or four paragraphs is enough

Do not forget to change the recipient's name and company name for each cover letter

Remember that your cover letter is another opportunity to give employers a snapshot of your skills as they apply to the position you're seeking.

           3) Stand Out from the Crowd

After you have developed and/or updated both your resume and cover letter it is time to think about how to attack the job market. Doing so will help you stand out from the crowd of potential candidates. The key to getting hired is to stay memorable. Doing things such as printing your resume and cover letter on quality paper or bringing a portfolio of your work for the employer to review, can help with this. Other things to consider:

            Arrive early to the facility

            Purchase business cards for yourself

Offer pens/paper with your name on it

Remember the name of the interviewer

When attempting to stand out stay away from jokes, pranks, or videos that one could find offensive or annoying. Refrain from wearing loud or distracting clothing or using inappropriate language.

           4) Develop a Job Search Strategy

Another tool that you can use when searching for a job, is to develop a job search strategy. First, determine whether you are seeking employment within a small or large company. The best way to do this is to follow the steps below:

Use job search engines. These help you find job postings fast.

Search Google to get a quick list of employers that are hiring in the area.

Apply directly on company websites. Once the job is no longer listed and is removed from the site, it will not show up in the search results. Also, your application will go into the company's tracking system. This can provide updates on the status of your application over time.

Use your network, both online and in person. Let your friends and family know that you are seeking employment.

As we continue to combat this global pandemic, more and more employees are working remotely, which means that many interviews will transition from in-person to online. This helps many companies complete first-round interviews quickly, save on transportation costs, and keep their workplace healthy. Many hiring managers and company recruiters setup virtual interviews utilizing live video chat with a hiring manager, or by inviting you to participate in an on-demand interview with management.

In an on-demand interview, you will record your responses to a series of interview questions for the hiring manager to review at a later date. This type of interview can be very challenging because you are not really seeing the person you are talking too. The trick here is to pretend that you are actually speaking with the hiring manager. If you are planning to complete a video interview there are a few things to consider to ensure that you have the best conversation possible.

Tip Number 1: Stay Software Friendly

Part of having a great online or video interview is knowing how to use the selected platform to complete your interview. This means understanding how to use the record functions, engage in live chat, and log in an out of the software safely. Most employers utilize Zoom, Google Meet, or Skype as their video platform to conduct interviews. With these types of online platforms, it is best to create a user name and password, and ensure that they are compatible with your computer/laptop.

Tip Number 2: Continue to Plan

Please remember that a video interview carries as much weight as a face-to-face interview, so you will want to ensure that you are prepared to interview remotely. The only way to ensure that you are ready is to plan. Take the time to prepare for your interview in advance. In most cases, everything will go smoothly, but it will be less stressful if you practice by completing a trial run a day or two before the interview.

This is the perfect time to check your webcam, headset, and microphone to ensure that they are working properly. If possible, download or use the same video technology that you will be using during the actual interview. By doing this, you will reduce your chances of having any last-minute installation issues or password malfunctions.

It is a good idea to keep your camera at eye level. A poorly placed camera can result in unflattering double chins or weird shadows. Check to make sure your sound equipment works properly because one of the worst things that can happen is the hiring manager being unable to hear you. Regardless of location, make sure that you send any materials (resume, portfolio, etc.) that the recruiter needs, in advance. This will help keep the process running smoothly. It will also show the hiring manager that you are efficient.

Tip Number 3: Check Your Background

During your test run, it is a good idea to review the background or environment that shows up in the video. Does it look cluttered or distracting? Does the light cause the video to be darker or cause shadows? Keep your background tidy and free from distractions. Either a plain white wall or office-like setting is perfect. Also, be sure to stay away from online backgrounds or green screens as they can cause distorted video.

Tip Number 4: Dress for the Job

A video interview can make or break a candidate, and one of the easiest ways for a candidate to fall out of line in the hiring process, is to not dress for the job. Though there are some employers who may not have a preference in attire, most employers prefer that job candidates wear business casual, and I would have to agree.

Also, the camera angle should show you from the waist up because your face is the real focal point. However, if there is any possibility that you will need to stand up, be sure that your slacks or skirt is professional. You don't want to be the person whose inappropriate interview attire gets noticed.

Tip Number 5: During Your Video Interview

During the interview, make sure that the computer is in a stable area and the surroundings are clean and neat. You don't want to distract the interviewer. If you're interviewing in your home, make sure that you are in a quiet space with no barking dogs, children, music, or other sounds.

Also, turn off your phone and any alerts on your computer to avoid getting thrown off by emails or instant messages during the interview. The microphone will pick up any noise in the room, so be sure not to tap your pen or shuffle papers. Remember to make eye contact by looking at the camera (and not the picture-in-picture image of yourself). This can be difficult to do at times but try your best. Use good posture during the interview and avoid making a lot of hand gestures even with a great Internet connection, as there can be lag time, causing the hand gestures to be more distracting than helpful.

Tip Number 6: What Are Employers Look For?

Recruiters and hiring managers want to know that you can do the job required, so they ask specific questions. They are looking for your ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work. They are also seeking candidates who can obtain and process information, analyze quantitative data, and utilize any technical knowledge related to the job. Remember to answer the questions asked, showing creativity in your responses, and relating an experience that demonstrates how you can perform the job required.

Remember to be presentable, making sure you are dressed and groomed appropriately. Also, be sure to practice your answers, so you have the best representation of yourself as possible. Videos are a great way to stand out from other applicants who may only have paper applications or online text resumes. The best video interviews are the ones that get forwarded and replayed many times.

Life after graduation is a story I know all too well. One of the many things that many new graduates miss is presentation or professional image. I know when I used to prepare for job interviews, many career articles would state that you have to go into the interview scheduled to "sell yourself". But what does this really mean? What does it mean to have something to sell? Does that mean that you dilute your values and goals, and exaggerate your abilities and interests, all in hopes of getting the job?

Life after graduation is a story I know all too well. One of the many things that get missed with a lot of new graduates is presentation or professional image. I know when I used to prepare for job interviews, many of the career articles would state that you have to go into the interview prepared to "sell yourself". But what does this really mean? What does it mean to have something to sell? Does that mean that you dilute your values and goals, and exaggerate your abilities and interests, all in hopes of getting the job?

Honestly, I think what's important is to build a professional brand around who you are, based on your work experiences, commitments, and personality. It’s about making your mark and highlighting the value that you can deliver to others. It's about showing who you are, what you stand for, the values you embrace, and the way in which you express those values. Just as a company’s brand helps to communicate its mission and values to customers, a professional brand should do the same for individuals who are seeking employment. It should help in communicating your identity and values to potential employers or clients.

In order to build a professional brand or image that accurately reflects your career identity, you first need to know who you are. Be introspective and create a list of your professional strengths and weaknesses. Ask yourself:

            What motivates me?

What is my mission in the industry?

What skills have others complimented me on?

What do I like best about the industry?

What challenges me most about the industry?

Please remember that many people struggle to choose a specific niche or area because they don’t want to limit themselves, however, you must realize that your professional brand, like many company brands, will change as your career grows. The best strategy is to choose a particular area that you would like to focus on now and evolve with over time.

After you have identified who you are, it’s time to determine what you want to be known for. Your professional brand is more than a reflection of who you are today; it’s a road-map of where you plan to go. In addition to understanding your existing skills and competencies, you must assess your strengths and weaknesses as they relate to the industry for which you want to work. This can help you better determine what steps you need to take in order to get there.

Before you begin creating your professional brand, you also need to determine who you’re trying to reach. Who is your audience? Is it other industry leaders? An individual at a particular company? Recruiters? The sooner you define the audience, the easier it will be to create your public image, because you’ll better understand the type of story you need to tell (and where you need to tell it.) For example, if your goal is to reach hiring managers and recruiters, you might start by creating or updating your LinkedIn profile because many company recruiters use this social media platform to find high-quality candidates.

Ask yourself what problem you are pushing to solve in your industry. This is very important because it helps you establish your own professional mission as a career professional. This will also help you determine which industries or sectors will compliment you as a professional.

After you have identified your problem and established a professional mission statement, it’s time to see the proof. What have you done to solve the problem? Sharing specific examples of some challenges you’ve faced, work that you have produced, and what resulted from your efforts, builds your credibility and trust in your networking communities.

In addition to putting action toward solving your problem, another way to establish your brand is to write or speak about what you know and share the information on public platforms such as LinkedIn or YouTube. This will help to establish a community around your knowledge or industry experience which in turn will work in your favor to continue to build your reputation. This is very important because your reputation is a good way to determine if a job selects you, as well as how much they will pay you for your work. Remember that your reputation is everything and that it is connected to your career image which, in terms of money, opportunity, and growth, can be devastating if not taken seriously.

Next, it’s about showing personality. Think about it. What sets you apart from the thousands of others in your field? Your professional brand is more than a collection of facts that have been polished to sound good. It’s an opportunity to express your passions and own your uniqueness. It’s an opportunity to help you be clear about what makes you relevant and compelling to people who are making decisions about you.

Lastly, research your desired industry and consider following the experts. This is where you take the opportunity to find the leaders in the field you’re interested in, read their blogs and journal articles, listen to their speeches, and review their books. Look for people who are successful and examine what they’re doing and how you can do it better.

Remember, when building your professional brand your main objective should be to stand out from the crowd, but it can be difficult to rise to the top without taking inventory of who’s already there. Your professional brand is more than just a persona or a trend; it’s how you carry yourself at home, in the office, and with friends. Your reputation consists of how you behave, how you act, and how you treat people. That image you sell, combined with everyday interactions, will ultimately define your professional brand.
